Benefits of Virtual Servers
As a small business owner I tend to wear many hats, one of which is IT Director. As my company continues to grow, I have decided to upgrade our environment and determine how we can become more efficient. Having always wondered about cloud computing, I began by researching various options, both physical and virtual to see how they differ.
A new dedicated server gives me the most control over my environment but the hefty price tag is not currently in my budget. Having your own server can be costly and may be difficult to administer without the proper IT knowledge. Besides the upfront costs, there are heating, cooling, power, and bandwidth issues to manage. In addition to the hardware, you also need to purchase, install and configure the necessary software programs.
Virtual servers, I was amazed to discover, offer me the security, flexibility, and price tag that will enable me to expand my environment while still watching the crucial bottom line. A virtual server is a great way to experience the benefits of having your own server, but without all the upfront costs. Moving to a hosted platform, a.k.a. “The Cloud”, turned out to be the perfect solution; it was the most economical choice and provided me plenty of flexibility.
After careful research that included the internet, colleagues, and professionals, I am completely comfortable with my technology in a virtualized environment and feel like I am no longer tethered to my IT equipment.
