Performance
Wireless Internet Access is available from 128K up to 1.5Mbps of
total throughput. This is over 25 times faster than a typical dial
modem connection. Wireless connections are not constrained by telephone
circuit limitations and can easily accommodate the access requirements
of large organizations.
Cost Savings
By circumventing the telephone company's "local loop"
charges, significant cost savings are realized. The usual charges
for T1 or other premium-priced hard-wired lines are reduced to zero.
High Availability
Wireless connections are immune to the fluctuations in reliability
and availability of telephone carriers' networks. By maintaining
a private wireless connection to the Internet, subscribers control
their own uptime.
Time to Implement
Wireless has a faster installation time than hard-wired connections.
In many cases, hard-wired connections require significant turnaround
time for telephone companies to install additional facilities to
handle new service.
Wireless LAN/WAN - Features & Benefits
Expanded Reach
Local and wide area networks have inherent length limitations when
built with copper-based wiring standards like 10baseT Ethernet.
Fiber-optic cabling can stretch those limitations but only while
adding significant cost. Wireless LAN/WAN technology can extend across
campuses or across cities to connect users without performance penalties
and without being cost prohibitive.
Right-of-Way
When used as alternative to fiber optic cabling or leased line connections,
wireless LANs and WANs do not require special permits for digging, routing
or terminating connections. Also, they operate in a special range
of frequencies which do not require FCC licensing or prior approval
by local authorities.
Time to Implement
Compared with using hard-wired connections, connecting sites with
wireless technology is significantly faster to implement. In fact,
when connecting users, which are spread across a corporate park
or over many miles, wireless LAN/WAN technology offers the fastest way
to interconnect remote buildings.
