Probably one of the most often asked questions is how to register a nickname. It is simple really, and affords you some of the other benefits on IRC such as being able to send off-line messages to others using Memoserv and registering your very own chat room.
To register your nickname you use this command. /msg nickserv register password email address. You must be using the nick that you want to register at the time of registration.
Where this command lists 'password' you must substitute a good password for your nickname. Where it says 'email address' you must substitute an e-mail address that works for you. Some networks e-mail you confirmation or a pass code for your nick when you register, some do not. Make sure you write it down. If you ever loose your password, you may go to one of the Administration channels and ask and IRCop to peek your password for you. Once the IRCop is convinced that you are the actual owner of that nick, he or she will be able to look up your password and 'remind' you of it.
There are many options that are available for your nickname once it is registered. To change the options for your nickname, you must be 'identified' by nickserv as the actual owner of the nickname. To do this, you must type /msg nickserv identify your password. Just substitute your password for your nickname for 'your password'.
The most important and most often asked question about nickname options, is setting a kill on your nickname if its used by someone else. A 'kill' means that someone using your nickname when they logged on would be prompted by nickserv to change their nickname, or they would be disconnected from the server in 60 seconds. To make this option enabled for your nickname, you must type the command /msg nickserv set kill on. You will be asked by nickserv to 'identify' for that nickname if you have not already done so.
