The World of IRC
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. A complete chat network that coexists with the web as we know it. IRC is composed of many groups of IRC servers that are linked together to form networks. This size of the networks vary from one to the other, but they all do basically the same thing by allowing us to log onto the network and access chat rooms (channels) at the same time as other people from all over the world, in real time.
IRC can be accessed in several different ways. From your web browser you can access IRC from any web page that has a Java interface chat room , or you can access IRC from one of the many 'clients' or programs that were designed to use IRC. The most popular of these clients are mIRC and Pirch.
Through
a web site, IRC is accessed by clicking on the chat link on the page, which in
turn loads a Java applet which connects to the IRC server, joining you to the
channel that was intended by the webmaster. Through a client such as ,mIRC you must connect to one of
the network servers of your choice, such as chat.strictlyhosting.com (our
server), Webnet, or Dalnet.
Networks such as these are not linked together but are separate networks
containing their own group of many servers linked together. In order to
be in the same channel with someone in particular, both parties must be on the
same network i.e.. chat.strictlyhosting.com,
although they may be connected to two totally different servers on the network.
